The Second Best Bed

Saturday 2 July  7:30pm      The Croft Hall

By Avril Rowlands

Shakespeare famously left his wife Anne only one thing: the second best bed. This critically acclaimed play stars Liz Grand as Anne Hathaway, alone on the night of his funeral, recalling with humour and pathos her life with the most talented playwright the world has ever seen. Or was he? Did he really write the plays? Surely his widow would know….wouldn’t she?

Blues in the Park: Poetry, Humour and Jazz
Maureen Lipman, Jeremy Robson, Jacqui Dankworth and Charlie Wood

Sunday 3 July  7:30pm      John O’Gaunt School

Actress Maureen Lipman, poet Jeremy Robson, jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth and pianist-vocalist Charlie Wood combine their extraordinary talents in this original and entertaining programme. Lipman joins Robson in reading some of his poems and performs some of her own witty monologues, and Dankworth and Wood sing classic songs by great musical partnerships and composers.

Robson’s latest collection, Blues In the Park, is, says Lipman,’ a marvellous wry observation of the sweet, sour and savoury in life’. Herself the author of a number of bestselling books, the Olivier-award-winning and much-loved actress has played many leading roles on stage and television.

Grammy-award-winning Dankworth is one of the UK’s most highly-regarded vocalists, with an effortless mastery of a wide range of genres including soul and blues. Wood is an American singer/songwriter and pianist whose eclectic musical style incorporates elements of jazz, blues, traditional R&B and popular music. They are accompanied by the brilliant bassist Oli Hayhurst and saxophonist Julian Siegel, one of Europe’s leading jazz player-composers.

Jessica Wise (soprano) & Guy Murgatroyd (piano)

Monday 4 July  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

Jessica Wise’s musical training began in earnest in 2012 with her post-graduate studies at Birmingham Conservatoire. Since last September she has been studying under Hungarian soprano Ingrid Kertesi at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, as a recipient of the Weingarten Scholarship. In January this year she joined the Europa Chor Akademie touring Mahler’s Symphony 3 in Germany and France with the South West Radio Symphony Orchestra of Freiburg and Baden Baden.

Pianist Guy Murgatroyd achieved notable competition success in his home counties of Hampshire and Berkshire, before setting out to continue his studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire on a scholarship. Now in his fourth year, Guy performs frequently around the country as a soloist and chamber musician. He also has a strong passion for piano accompaniment – in particular vocal accompaniment, for which he was recently awarded a garland of prizes and also the opportunity to perform for Elly Ameling at the Wigmore Hall. Guy is extremely interested in the relationship between classical music and jazz and is currently working on a project to perform and record the complete piano sonatas of Ukrainian fusion composer Nikolai Kapustin.

Black Legend (Film)

Thursday 7 July  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

Directed by Alan Cooke and John Schlesinger (1948)

Black Legend was the first attempt at a feature film by John Schlesinger, one of Britain’s most acclaimed film directors. It was made while he was a student at Oxford and is of great local interest as this story of a murder committed over 300 years ago was filmed in Inkpen and Combe with fellow students (including Robert Hardy), family members and villagers as actors. As Schlesinger wrote in the programme notes for the film’s first-ever showing in Inkpen, “Black Legend is dedicated to the villages of Inkpen and Combe, and to all those for miles around whose unbounded good will was sufficient to bring the Story of the Gibbet to the screen.”

Since 1999, with the help of advancing technology the film has been progressively improved, so that it is now in higher definition, longer, with music and a commentary by Robert Hardy, and with a wider and more comprehensive picture than ever before.

The programme lasts just over 2 hours. It starts with Robert Hardy going down memory lane on film with Charles Lepper, who was one of the (few remaining) actors involved. The film itself follows, then, after a short interval, there is an opportunity to see a very entertaining conversation between Robert Hardy and Jon Snow.

The Fossil Lady of Lyme

Friday 8 July  7:30pm      The Croft Hall

The story of Mary Anning

Written and performed by Alison Neil

Two hundred years ago the belief was that the world was only 6000 years old and everything was created in six days. Within a generation those accepted truths were blown apart as the existence of a vast prehistoric age was proved. Mary Anning played a key part in that extraordinary time. She discovered the first complete fossil of a prehistoric reptile in Britain at the age of 12, and throughout her life continued to make ground-breaking discoveries, though ‘the fine clever men of science’ took most of the credit for her work.

Alison Neil brings Mary to vibrant life in this entertaining account of her struggle to make her mark, as well as ends meet.

Tickets (£10.00) will be available from the Box Office (Newbury Building Society, Hungerford) or by telephone (01488 684038) from approx. mid May.

The ‘Phantastica’

Tuesday 12 July  7:30pm      The Croft Hall

Illustrated talk by John Robertson, former Poison Garden Warden at Alnwick Garden

The term ‘Phantastica’ was coined by the German pharmacologist Dr Louis Lewin to embrace all the substances, mostly plant derived, which affect the human brain in any way. Traces of what we now know to be psychoactive plants have been found in human habitations dating from many thousands of years ago. Why do people continue to use substances that can have harmful and unpleasant effects, and what do we really know about the plants and fungi that provide them?

John Robertson focuses on the fact, fiction and folklore of psychoactive plants. There are many amusing and bizarre stories in the history of these plants – but are they any more bizarre than some of the ‘facts’ put forward by those who think a drug-free world is achievable?

You are cordially invited to enter the dark comic world of Moscow Drug Club, a curious musical place where certain elements of 1930s Berlin Cabaret, Hot Club de France, Nuevo Tango and Gypsy Campfire meet, have a few drinks and stagger arm-in-arm into the darkness of some eastern European cobbled street in a search for the bar where Django Reinhardt and Tom Waits are jamming after-hours with the local Tziganes.

Lili La Scala

Friday 30 June  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

With her vintage pin-up looks, sky high heels and razor-sharp wit, Lili la Scala can regularly be found delighting audiences the world over with her captivating cabaret repertoire. It’s easy to see why the little Diva with the big voice, nicknamed the Songbird of Trafalgar Square, has become a sell-out favourite worldwide.

Lili’s latest show, the award-winning ‘Songs To Make You Smile’, is an enthralling, upbeat medley of wartime classics, show tunes and decidedly bright-and-breezy numbers from yesteryear bound to put a spring in your step. From American composers Irving Berlin and Cole Porter to British legends Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn, and with a splash of George Formby thrown in for good measure, Lili offers traditional tunes delivered with cabaret sass. Her huge voice and equally big personality won’t fail to leave you cheered.

Alexander Karpeyev – Piano recital

Monday 3 July  7:30pm      The Croft Hall

‘1917: The Final Flowering’

Alexander Karpeyev is rapidly gaining a reputation as a notable interpreter of the piano music of the Russian Silver Age. In this centenary year of the Russian Revolution, his recital gathers together pieces by the emigre composers Grechaninov, Medtner, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Having fled Russia before or immediately following the Revolution, they were later divided in their opinions of the new regime, with varying consequences for their subsequent careers.

The music chosen to illustrate the ‘Final Flowering’, composed between 1911 and 1917, reflects this and includes rarely performed miniatures by Grechaninov, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka transcription and the Sonate-Ballade by Medtner, in whose music Karpeyev specialises.

Karpeyev last performed in Hungerford nearly 10 years ago when he was a prize-winning student at the Guildhall School of Music. He has given recitals in many prestigious venues, including the Purcell Room, the Barbican, Royal Festival, Wigmore, Fairfield and Queen Elizabeth Halls. He has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in Belgium, Canada, Greece, Japan, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. His performances have been featured on Sky Television and BBC Radio. Last year he organized the first International Medtner Festival in 2016.

‘A new Russian master arrives in London … in a world class concert the young Russian pianist Alexander Karpeyev held his audience spellbound … think Pletnev, Kissin, Trifonov … he merits the comparison’ Catholic Herald

Watermill Theatre: Nesting

Monday 10 July  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

A new play by Ellen Robertson

Linda is a self-confessed ‘collector’. She has all the necessities: broken umbrellas to match any outfit, unopened Amazon parcels delivered in 2012, shoes that don’t fit but were a bargain at 75 per cent off, and trainers because, one day, she will definitely take up running. Adding to her collection there is Tony, an affectionately named rat who has taken up residence in her home.

The arrival of Jonathan – a man who can’t sleep if the sponge is in the wrong place by the kitchen sink – brings about a more life-changing situation than Linda could ever have imagined. The journey that follows is one of love, loss – and an obsession with Stevie Wonder memorabilia.

Nesting is a funny and moving look at compulsive behaviour and finding love in the most unlikely of places.

Classic Silent Film Double Bill

Thursday 13 July  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

Safety Last!

Dir. Fred Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, 1923 (80 mins)

The silent film era’s ‘third genius’ along with Chaplin and Keaton was Harold Lloyd, who stars in Safety Last! as a country boy trying to make good in the Big City. In one of the most iconic sequences in silent cinema, Lloyd scales a 12-storey building and dangles precariously from a clock above the busy street below.

Speedy

Dir. Ted Wilde, 1928 (70 mins)

Lloyd’s final silent feature, in which he plays a young man whose obsession with baseball causes him to continually lose jobs, is a fascinating visual record of New York in the late 1920s, from its skyline to Coney Island’s Luna Park, from Columbus Circle to Wall Street. Baseball legend Babe Ruth makes an extended cameo appearance as himself.

Graham Harvey: In Search of Countryside Treasure

Friday 29 June  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

An evening with Graham Harvey, Ambridge’s ‘Minister of Agriculture’

With music by Alastair Collingwood

Writer of over 600 episodes of The Archers – the world’s longest-running radio soap opera – and creator of some of its most memorable storylines and characters, Graham Harvey looks back on his time with the programme and explains how it is created. Fans will enjoy the light-hearted pub quiz on the show!

With live music, songs and readings from his stage play, No Finer Life, Graham explores our relationship with the countryside. “Farming,” he says, “the state of the land, its impact on the countryside and the quality of the food it produces, and our individual health are inextricably linked. Getting it right is perhaps the most important challenge of the 21st century. Deciding what we do, even discussing it, should not be left to politicians, industry or those working the land alone. Everyone should be part of a great debate.”

A discussion and Q&A session on rural life concludes the evening.

One of the most influential campaigners on rural matters in the UK, Graham writes for The Sunday Times, New Scientist, and Country Life, and for three years he wrote the ‘Old Muckspreader’ column in Private Eye. The author of We Want Real Food and The Carbon Fields, his views have reached national prominence (the current Minister for Agriculture is a confirmed disciple!). His other plays include The Darkness of the Sun, the story of the writer Henry Williamson.

Ashworth & Rattenbury – Guitar Recital

Sunday 1 July  8:00pm      Our Lady of Lourdes

Ashworth & Rattenbury Guitars began playing as a duo to prepare music for a celebration of composer Milton Babbitt’s centenary in 2016. Their performance was recorded for later broadcast by BBC Radio 3’s ‘Hear & Now’ show, and they also performed Babbitt’s music at further concerts. Inspired to explore the guitar duet repertoire further, they now perform a wide range of music for two guitars. This includes arrangements of baroque keyboard music, well-known classical guitar duets, choros from Latin America, and works by the American minimalists. Both guitarists are also members of the Sussex Guitar Quartet.

Jon Rattenbury is an active guitarist and music educator. He has wide experience as a performer on electric and classical guitar and as a music tutor. Jon has worked as a music examiner for RSL and the International Baccalaureate Organisation, and has recently worked as a music consultant for ABRSM, helping to develop a new popular music syllabus. Jon completed his Masters in music at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has interests in both historical and contemporary musicology. In 2014, the Lute Society published Jon’s critical edition of 17th century baroque guitar songs from the library of Samuel Pepys at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Brian Ashworth studied classical guitar, piano, and harmony, benefiting greatly from his studies with Robert Brightmore at music college in London. Professional projects have included TV and radio work with composer Karl Jenkins, working from Olympic Studios in London. His recent focus has remained in contemporary music and education, working in Brighton as a guitar, bass, drum kit and ukulele teacher. Brian also travels internationally as a performer, presenter, and educator. He has played and recorded with many ensembles over the years, with particular interest in ‘Early’ and ‘Late’ periods of music.

Film Night – Maudie (12)

MAUDIE, based on a true story, is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper.

Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. State of the Nation – Ayesha Hazarika

Friday 13 July  8:00pm      The Croft Hall

Politics, power and how we lost the plot

Ayesha Hazarika, MBE, started her career as a stand-up comedian playing clubs across the country. She then took what she thought was a natural diversion into the Labour Party as a Special Adviser working for Gordon Brown, Harriet Harman and Ed Miliband.

Since leaving front line politics she’s become a much sought-after commentator writing for the FT, Guardian, Evening Standard, New Statesman and Grazia.

Ayesha has also returned to her stand-up roots. Her one-woman show ‘Tales from the Pink Bus’ was a sell-out hit at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival and she’s been in huge demand on TV and radio.

Ayesha lifts the lid on what life’s really like behind the scenes at Westminster with brutal honesty and humour and asks what’s next for British politics.

Not only is she extremely funny, but she uses her inside knowledge of the Labour machine to deadly effect. Though always sharp and on the money, she is never cruel and manages to create a world I never thought possible. Catch her if you can.
John Crace, The Guardian
